How to get discounts on cell phone service
Did you know that you may be able to get a discount on your monthly cell phone service without hardly trying? Most people are unaware that there even are discounts cell phone companies offer on rate plans and services, yet cell phone companies often offer discounts to all kinds of companies and organizations that you probably belong to. Some examples are the Army, students, companies like Wal-Mart and GM, and many smaller companies and even organizations AAA. You could have been saving money all this time and never known it.
Many times you can go to a companies website and look for a discount link, usually at the bottom of the homepage (wouldn’t want to make it too conspicuous would they?). Honestly though, It is much easier to simply call the company if you already have service, or check with the store before you get service to see if they offer a discount for your company or organization. Even the best websites are sometimes tough to find discount information on (again, they don’t make it easy).
When you call, the cell phone company will transfer you to a “migration” specialist to help you get your discount. They will ask some discount questions like where do you work, what is your employee I.D. number, what is your blood type and bra size, etc. No, it’s not quite that bad, but they want to make sure you work, or belong to the organization you say you do.
And, that’s about it. If you qualify, they will change your billing due date and cycle to match everyone else you work with (so they can bill you all the same), and you can save anywhere between 10 and 15% on rate plans and services. Some companies even give discounts on phone purchases and waived activation fees.
Unfortunately, if you were eligible for the discount and had service for 10 years and never took advantage of it, they aren’t going to credit you for the past (what are they, charities?). But, if you threaten to cancel because of that, they may give you an extra 10 or $15 “goodwill” credit. Depends if it is worth your time and getting angry about. The discounts are definitely worth looking into, as the commercial goes, a 15 minute call can save you some real money.
